| Tuesday, 13 December 2022 November marks my first six months as executive director of Dallas Contemporary. It has been an intense and exciting time of transformation and growth – we have welcomed new members to the team, infusing the staff with new talent and energy; cultivated our approach to greater community engagement; revitalized and enriched our goals for public programming; and begun to shape a robust schedule of upcoming exhibitions. As my staff and I begin to imagine this bright future of Dallas Contemporary, we are proud knowing that this now women-led, Texan institution is mapping innovative and diverse directions in art and discourse – we look forward to rolling out these initiatives in the coming year. Trusting that YOU believe in such a future, we are seizing this moment to ask for your continued financial support to help bring it to fruition. Here, we’re delighted to share some of our vision’s progress so far. With a curatorial mission to champion the power of artists to chronicle and transform society, we welcomed two exhibition artists this fall: American artist Shepard Fairey with a show called Backward Forward, which tackles the social justice issues that continue to affect our nation, from gun violence to the pursuit of civil rights, as well as Gabrielle Goliath’s work Chorus, a profoundly moving video installation that mourns the lives lost to femicide in the artist’s native South Africa. Alongside Goliath’s exhibition, we also formed a community partnership with Dallas-based domestic violence agency The Family Place to provide resources for DC visitors that might need emotional support after seeing the work, demonstrating our firm commitment to nurturing our community through care. As an extension of that care-based practice, we continue to offer free admission for alland foster growth of our unparalleled learning programs – our foremost public initiative. Dallas Contemporary’s free learning programs are almost exclusively exhibition-specific and offer hands-on learning to individuals of all ages and skill levels, as well as talks and lectures with artists, curators, and other creative practitioners. This past summer, we also launched DC Summer Series, offering day to night activities that engage a range of audiences, featuring wellness instruction to artmaking activities to nighttime DJ sets, bringing exposure of our exhibitions and mission to a general public. And this winter, in the spirit of fostering a better future, we will inaugurate an annual art and activism festival called Raise Your Voice Fest! dedicated to North Texas’s high school students. In the spring, we look forward to hosting the exhibition Cerámica Suro: A History of Collaboration, Production and Collecting in Contemporary Artfocused on the unorthodox private collection of Jose Noe and Marcela Suro of Guadalajara, Mexico, who have amassed a collection entirely by gift exchange with artists, underscoring what fruits generosity makes possible. Lastly, as a kunsthalle art space with an ample, adaptable building, Dallas Contemporary has the privilege of crafting public programs that engage the widest range of current artistic practice, including time-based, performative work. In the coming months, we will announce a series of performance programs with local and international array of artists.These projects will activate the gallery spaces with cutting-edge experimental art, music, dance, fashion, and other imaginative interventions that promise to delight and grow audiences, enriching the vibrant landscape of contemporary art in Dallas and well beyond.
