“Human identity found solely in the physical bodies humans possess, and material items used as social markers, are eventually rubbed out and returned to dust. True human existence is found in the spirit, heart, and memories of the being. They persist long after death and decay.”“My work explores human existence; the idea that life and death exist simultaneously, and neither is to be feared or celebrated more than the other.”

–Jona RamirezJonathan (Jona) Ramirez is a 39-year-old Mexican-born artist currently living in Dallas, specializing in painting, sculpture, multimedia art, organic media, video, and photography. His fearless, passionate works explore dark surrealism, challenge social and cultural icons, combine modern and Renaissance-inspired images, and provoke existentialist thought and emotion.

While his somber style can arouse complicated emotions, his work is inspired by the beauty of music, the trials and significance of social justice, and the transcendence of love.

His work has been exhibited across the United States and in England, Spain, and Portugal. He has been featured in the world press since 2010 and is a recipient of the Fashion Group International (FGI) Rising Star Award (2015) and the DFW Arts Award for Expressionism (2016).

The vivid, abstract, modern, textural characteristics of Ramirez’s works share visual themes with the permanent collection of the Padilla Gallery. We believe his pieces and themes with resonate with, provoke, inspire, and challenge your audience.
