Ardmore Ceramics is based in Kwazulu-Natal, Africa and employs Zulu, Zimbabwean, and Sotho potters. They are given training, materials, and a studio to work in. Founded by Fée Halstead in 1985, Fée met Bonnie Ntshalintshali who became Fée’s first student. In 1990, under Fée’s mentorship they were jointly awarded the Standard Bank Young Artist award. Bonnie sadly passed away from AIDS in 1999, and the Bonnie Ntshalintshali Museum was erected in her honour.
Today, the bustling studio is home to over 85 African artists whose ceramic works have been recognized as modern day collectables by auction houses Christie’s, Bonham’s and Sotheby’s. Ardmore Design has emerged creating vibrant and elegant fabric collections, working in collaboration with renowned French fashion house Hermès, producing a line of lavish scarves of the highest quality, and British wallpaper manufacturers Cole and Son.
Ardmore Ceramic Art has been featured in numerous major exhibitions, including the 12th Istanbul Biennial, the Korean Biennial, Art Basel Miami, and The Great Zambezi Exhibition in London. Ardmore designs are considered a National Treasure and often are gifted to dignitaries, including Queen Elizabeth II.
This is an extraordinarily rare opportunity to view larger ceramic works in person, which are not normally available in this part of the country.
