Portraits of Frida are among the most reinterpreted by artist and art students. In this workshop you will have an opportunity to create your own interpretation of Frida and her life as an artist.

You will start the workshop with a 16” x 20” canvas with Frida’s facial features pre-drawn. You will complete the drawing by adding a hair style, clothing, and accessories of your choice. You will also add a background representative of the story you would like to tell about Frida.

Frida was a Mexican painter known for her many portraits, self-portraits, and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico. Inspired by the country’s popular culture, she employed a naïve folk-art style to explore questions of identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society. Her paintings often had strong autobiographical elements and mixed realism with fantasy. In addition to belonging to the post-revolutionary Mexicayotl movement, which sought to define a Mexican identity, Kahlo has been described as a surrealist or magical realist.

In addition to Frida’s paintings, she also has many stimulating quotes that may inspire your work of art.
