Call for Mail Art:
Día de Muertos 2020 @ Mary Karam Gallery (Denison, TX)
Mail art is a global art movement based on the principle of sending small scale works through the postal service rather than exhibiting or selling them through conventional commercial channels. Mail art is not juried, all submissions are accepted, and no fees are required of the artist for entry. Mail art must go through the mail (postal). It is considered original art but has no monetary value. Mail art goes one way (the artist does not get their work back). The art follows a theme and is generally shown and documented. See https://www.pinterest.com/pamelaarmas/mail-art/ .
Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is an ancient celebration observed throughout Mexico, as well as in Central American, South American and European regions. During the holiday, people remember and honor ancestors and deceased loved ones. The Denison Arts Council and the MK Gallery calls for mail art that incorporates imagery and themes (sugar skulls, skeletons imitating the living, ofrendas) associated with Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead). All work should be created on heavy weight postcard, blank paper, or index cards measuring 3” X 5” (7.6 cm X 12.7cm) or 4” X 6” (10.16 cm X 15.24 cm). Other surfaces are alright as long as they are one of the previously mentioned sizes and it is mailable. The imagery and/or words can be drawn, painted, collaged, or stamped on one side of the post card and the mailing address on the other side. Remember to place a stamp on your mail art piece. The mail art piece MUST BE RECEIVED NO LATER THAN MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2 in order to be in the “Día de Muertos 2020 Exhibit’. If you are not familiar with either mail art and/or imagery associated with Día de Muertos, look at the work of Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada (https://www.mexican-folk-art-guide.com/jose-guadalupe-posada.html#.XzXqBuhKiUk).
Have fun! Keep it original! Sign it! Put a stamp on it! Mail it!
