Guest Artist –Maribeth Jagger – Alcohol Inks
Maribeth has painted most of her adult life, but recently started working in alcohol inks.
“I love the vibrancy and spontaneity of alcohol inks. Much like watercolor, the inks can be controlled and manipulated, but I usually let them take the lead, then I’ll jump in and manipulate them to develop my subject.”
Maribeth studied art at Wright State University in Ohio, University of Texas Arlington and Northwest Florida State University. Moving often as a career Air Force Officer’s wife, Maribeth was given the opportunity to study with many accomplished artists around the country including Barclay Sheaks, Zoltan Szabo, Jane Nelson and most recently with alcohol ink artist Karen Walker. Maribeth also works in oils, watercolor, pastels and encaustics.
In this workshop, you will learn techniques used to create wonderful works of art in alcohol ink, learning to employ a little more control over the inks to produce abstract and realistic paintings while keeping the fluidity and looseness of the beautiful inks.
SUPPLIES:
• I will supply the following items to be used by the participants during the workshop: A variety of inks*, 91% rubbing alcohol, brushes, jars, gloves, palettes, and various items used to create texture.
• Bring Yupo paper. I will have 5 x 7” Yupo paper available for purchase for .50 per sheet at the workshop, or you can purchase it at Asel Art (a 9 x 12 pack of ten sheets is about $20) or you can order it online. You will probably want to use about 6 or 8 sheets.
• Brushes: I will supply some, you don’t need expensive brushes! Cheap, small watercolor or acrylic brushes work well. I generally use a #1, 2, or 4 round brush or small filbert (#2, #4). Just bring a variety if you have them.
*I will bring a variety of inks, but I suggest each participant may want to provide their own inks so that they can make sure to have the colors they want to use, and then be able to go home and continue to play with this very delightful medium.
I primarily use Ranger Adirondack alcohol inks. They can be purchased at craft stores (Michaels, Hobby Lobby, JoAnn’s) in the rubber-stamping area in packs of three colors for about $10 a pack (bring your coupons!) You can also find beautiful variety of Pinata brand inks at Asel Art.
