Opening Friday, October 25 at William Campbell Contemporary Art |
Editions + Cutouts, an exhibition of works by Alex Katz, will be on display October 25 – November 16th at William Campbell Contemporary Art. An opening reception will be held Friday, October 25, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The exhibition will feature original silkscreen prints and stainless-steel figurative cut-out sculptures by world renowned artist Alex Katz. An icon associated with pop art, Katz has developed a very abbreviated interpretation of his subject matter. His use of bold colors and reductive style is exemplified in this exhibition.
Several of Katz’ new prints are based on the Coca-Cola Girls,
nostalgic images that were an integral part of the company’s
advertising through the 1960’s, and used on large-scale billboards.
These depictions of the pin-up trend at the time were made popular
during WWI as advertising images by representing athletic women at
leisure while also serving to empower our service women.
Another recent image is Homage to Monet (Tryptich), a dynamic three-
panel work, no doubt inspired by Katz’ recent exhibition at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris in front of Monet’s Nymphéas. Katz has also recently begun to interpret his work into sculptural forms, which are flat, waterjet cut stainless-steel figures based on his paintings. The cutouts are then powder-coated and presented as free-standing works. The result of this presentation is very much ‘Alex Katz’, immediately recognizable and quite dynamic. Included in the exhibition are stylized portraits of some of Katz’ favorite models whom he has continuously painted over the years, especially his wife, Ada. The portraits are often rendered in profile or semi-profile,
giving them a beautiful, distinct style of portraiture. At 92, Alex Katz continues to be a part of the consciousness of the art world and an active participant in contemporary art. He remains young in attitude and produces relevant artwork for the world to enjoy.
Katz is represented in most major museums in the U.S. and Europe, has received most major awards and grants given in the United States, as well as being published in every major contemporary art publication since 1960. In 2019, Katz has had one-person exhibitions at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, The Fondation Louis Vuitton, the Daegu Art museum in South Korea, and the Dallas Museum of Art.
