“Atavism” – TVAA Gallery Art Exhibition for October 2019
noun: a tendency to revert to something ancient or ancestral.
One of the great difficulties facing contemporary artists is finding one’s own voice in the vast (and often cacophonous) sea of artistic styles and interpretations. The early Modernists often surrounded themselves with tribal, or ethnographic, art as a way to stay grounded in the cultural storytelling in which the visual arts have their root, even as their own art became more and more abstracted. For Atavism, we invite you to explore the evolution of your art. Submit works that meld the ancient with the contemporary, visually or conceptually. What can you create from the primordial chaos of art’s ancient history?

Exhibit Open to the Public: During Gallery business hours; Tuesday, October 8th – Friday, November 1st

CURATOR: Jonathan Carroll
ABOUT THE CURATOR: Jonathan Carroll is the Executive Director of The Center for Contemporary Arts in Abilene, Texas. Jonathan comes to the contemporary art scene after spending over a decade working with late 19th to mid 20th Century art as Gallery Director of Jody Klotz Fine Art in Abilene, TX. Of his time there, Jonathan said that “handling top-tier Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists and interacting with a truly international clientele afforded me fascinating and unique opportunities, and allowed me to develop a rich visual vocabulary.” Jonathan holds a BA in History from Abilene Christian University.
Jonathan moved to the nonprofit sector because “local art, by definition, is created within a context we share with it, making it immediately approachable, and meaningful. There is something uniquely visceral and energizing about watching art happen in front of you. Paintings being created right now will be part of our cultural dialogue decades, or centuries, from now. I think this is why art education is so crucial for children, and why art therapy is so holistically healing: it creates a vocabulary for understanding the world, and engaging with it, for those who, through trauma, or disability, or simple economic disadvantage and lack of mental stimuli, have otherwise lost their ability for expression.”
ELIGIBILTY: This show is open to TVAA members and non-members with ribbons being awarded to Best of Show, 1st, 2nd 3rd place, and honorable mention. Cash awards for Best in Show and 1st place!
REQUIREMENTS: All artwork must be wired and framed correctly. No ½” or ¾” canvases will be curated without a frame. Gallery wrapped work must have clean edges and no staples showing. Work that does not follow gallery requirements will not be hung. If invited to the exhibition you must sign up for one sitting day during the month or pay a $35.00 sitting fee for someone to cover your day. Any work not picked up on take down day with be stored for a $5.00 a day fee and then considered abandoned after 30 days. Any artwork sold pays a 25% fee to the TVAA.
Fees must be paid at the time of submission via the online form. $30.00 for up to 3 images for Members and $45.00 for up to 3 images for Non-Members. Please submit entries jpgs at 72 dpi and no longer than 1800 pixels on longest side. You must include your name, your e-mail address, the name of the piece, the size, medium of the work, and the selling price. All works must have been created in the last 3 years.
LIABILITY: Entering this exhibition constitutes an agreement to release the Texas Visual Arts Association, the TVAA Gallery, and the Plaza of the Americas from any liability for loss or damage to works of art in this exhibition. TVAA, the Gallery, or the Plaza of the Americas reserves the right to remove any work that is deemed objectionable for any reason.
PARKING: For delivery and pick up, you can park in the garage for $1.50 for each twenty (20) minute interval (vouchers are provided for delivery or pick-up). Metered parking is available on Pearl and Crockett Streets. Parking in lots on Crockett and San Jacinto is $6.00. DO NOT park in the permit-only zones behind the building on Crockett Street. Full-day Gallery sitters may park free in the garage (entrance on San Jacinto – between Pearl and Crockett).
