VAST Demonstration on Clay Cups: Mindy Faubion on Sept. 5

The Visual Arts Society of Texas (VAST) invites you to a demonstration on making cups from clay by artist Mindy Faubion on September 5th, from 6:45 – 9:00 pm at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, located at 400 East Hickory Street, Denton, TX.

“It can take me forever to choose the right coffee cup in the morning. And It does make a difference!” ~Joel Grey

“Need a cup of something in the morning to wake you up? Open your cabinet – CUPS! What cup shall I choose this morning? What influences that choice;  experiences, connections, colors, memories, occasion, smell, touch, taste? All of our senses can be involved in making that choice. I have several favorite cups that I choose from. They are all cups I’ve handmade from clay. It’s taken effort, thought, time, and intent to create these little sculptures. Yes sculptures! All of a sudden my functional, common day to day drinking cup becomes an intimate, tactile, experiential, interactive, expressive piece of art. One that I can enjoy alone or use to commune with others!

I’ll be demonstrating my process of creating a cup from clay and my thoughts along the way. And the way if you want to bring your favorite cup to drink out of during the demo please do!” ~Mindy Faubion, VAST President

Mindy Faubion’s Bio:

Mindy earned her BFA with a concentration in Watercolor from the University of North Texas. Her paintings have been shown in regional, national, and international exhibitions and are included in corporate and private collections. Many of her pieces have gone on to win awards, most recently she was published in “Splash 19, The Best of Watercolor”, won the Mary G. & John A. Woodard Memorial Award award through the Texas Watercolor Society,  the 2017 125-Mile Visual Art Society of Texas, James J. Johnson, Jr. Founders Award, and the Society of Watercolor Artists Juror’s Choice Award in their International juried art exhibition.

Watercolor is her first love, but she is prolific in acrylic, pastel, colored pencil, metals, printmaking and clay.
Sheloveslearning unique techniques and exploring anything new that comes to the art market. Her passion to continue her education and further her understanding of these mediums is an important stimulation for her ongoing creative journey.

Over the past year, she discovered an interest in clay that has grown into an eagerness to thoroughly explore its possibilities as an art medium and after getting her hands on a ball of clay she has not been able to leave it alone. That tactile experience has become a new passion. It wasn’t long before her mind started spinning with innovative ideas, which was the motivation she needed to rediscover all her artistic interests with new excitement. Working with clay perfectly balances tactile experience, creativity, color, and spontaneous design choices.

The demonstration is free for VAST members, and $5 for guests.
